How I became a Feline Master Groomer

I have always loved animals; I like to touch their faces, see the expressions in their eyes and just be a part of their lives. My family never really understood why I became so excited when I would experience animals, large or small, cats or dogs, but they meant unconditional love to me. What more could a child ask?

I began a career with Delta Airlines as a Flight Attendant some 20 years ago and after thought provoking, soul searching I asked myself, “What else would you like to do?” Then I saw an advertisement in the paper for pet grooming school, and I thought, “That’s it! I will groom cats!” Having been a cat lover all my life, I decided I’d go to school. At that time, no other student wanted to groom cats. Every cat that was brought into Merryfield’s School for Pet Grooming, including cats that were brought in for boarding, with their owner’s permission, I’d groom their cat. I promoted my service and opportunity for me to learn and maximized every occasion possible to groom cats.

After completing my training at Merryfield’s, I launched my pet grooming business, and after a few years of on the job enhancement of my education with experience, I heard about the National Cat Groomers Institute of America in Greenville, S.C. Danelle German is the President of National Cat Groomers Institute of America and she is the “cat expert”! Danelle owns the Catty Shack in Greenville (Cat Only Salon) and she is internationally known for having woven cat fur into purses. She has been on Animal Planet a number of times. I knew that I had to be taught by the best cat groomer, so I made the decision to fly to South Carolina to be trained by this nationally renowned cat grooming institute.

What an experience! It was enriched with so much information, more than I imagined; you are not there to waste time, nor does everyone pass the course. You are there to learn and to become the very best you can be. We learned about all 41 breeds of cats, as recognized by the Cat Fancy Association of America. We studied all breeds, their temperaments, dispositions and how to identify certain skin disorders while working with our client’s cats.

From a health perspective, we also learned how to check a cat’s blood pressure, perform CPR and to properly clean our equipment; we learned what is toxic to cats so we could be informed and be a knowledgeable, well trained support to the pet owners we’d serve. We studied diseases, particularly those that can be troubling to cats or put them in an at risk situation; things like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), urinary & bowel diseases, and Hyperthyroidism. We also learned about some of the pernicious viruses like the Feline Leukemia virus (FeLv), Feline Immunodeficiency virus (FIV)Aids, Feline Infectious peritonitis (FIP), FECV, Paneukopenia, and Rhinotracheitis.

On completion of my training, I earned the designation of Master Feline Groomer from the prestigious National Cat Groomers Institute of America. I don’t diagnose or treat a cat for any of the mentioned diseases, but as a value to my clients, can often recognize symptoms and suggest an owner take their cat to a Veterinarian. My grooming skills are tailored for the specific cat, its breed and the owner’s needs. I hold myself to the highest standards with regard to my in-home cat grooming business and the integrity with which I operate. I work with some of the best in my profession and have references available at your request.

Finally, which may be of interest to you, I send what is called in the industry “dirty cat fur” to a lab where allergy shots are made for people with allergies to cats; this disposable waste product is used for good and hopefully some day will better manage the symptoms of those who suffer with cat allergies.

I hope you will consider my story and allow me to become a part of your network of pet professionals and I look forward to that opportunity.

How to Choose a Cat Groomer

Choosing the right person to be your pet’s groomer is very important, and can seem like a daunting task. This article will help simplify the process by highlighting some of the most important questions to ask and things to look for when choosing your next pet groomer.

Your groomer is vital to your pet’s happiness and health. Where your pet may see their vet once or twice a year for check ups, your groomer is there every few months giving them a full once over. Groomers are responsible for so much more than a bath and hair cut. They maintain ear, teeth, nail and skin health; frequently checking for any new abnormalities such as suspicious lumps and keeping an eye on existing issues, notifying you of changes. This is why it is so important to find a dedicated professional to care for your pets grooming needs; and here is how you can make sure you’re getting the best your town has to offer.

If at all possible, watch your kitty being groomed. This way you will have the opportunity to check out how your kitty is being treated. The very best way to find a groomer who’s grooming style matches your personal preferences is to ask for a referral from a neighbor, friend or co-worker if you have admired their pets grooming. Next, get your list of questions ready.

Questions you should ask

What is your grooming experience and how long have you been in this business?
Something to keep in mind is that there are no state or national boards to hold groomers to any set standards (like there is in cosmetology) so knowledge and experience can vary drastically. There are organizations and clubs groomers can pay to join but this does not necessarily make them the best option. This also means there is no health board to make sure the salon is clean and bacteria free.

Are Cats Litter Box Trained?

Cats are so cool! They come litter box trained. However the owner does need to show kitty where the litter box is and keep it clean. Puppies must be trained and some are never fully trained as adults.

How did cats come to acquire being litter box trained?  It’s an inborn matter of self-preservation.  In the wild, cats bury their feces to hide their presence from predators or territorial rivals.  Our domestic house cats continue the habit, which is one of the things that make them such clean companions.  The urge to hide their presence is so strong that even if a cat eliminates outside her box, she will still go through the motions of diffing and covering.

Although the litter box habit is deeply ingrained, there are several instances in which a cat may stop using her box.  This can lead to a mess situation, but by doing a little detective work, you can soon set your bat back on the proper path.

Make sure you kitty is not ill.  Take kitty to the veterinarian for a complete check up to rule out any physical problems.  If kitty get a clean bill of health. Make sure the litter box is clean, maybe change litters? Are there any other changes in the house?  If you have one cat, maybe try having two litter boxes. Is your kitty stressed out about something in your home?

Groomers See Pet More Often Than Vet

Usually a groomer will see our pets more often that their veterinarians.  Groomers are the “eye in the field”.  Who else sees every inch of our pet’s body?  The groomer certainly does.  When bathing, blow drying, shaving, combing and handling cats, they see all there is to see. When a customer is regular with their grooming appointments (every 6 weeks) any changes in a pet’s skin, coat, weight, behavior becomes very obvious to the groomer.

When you have a Certified Master Groomer, they have had to take more test, and have the highest education possible to achieve a Masters in Cat or Dog Grooming. They can’t diagnose a pet medical problem.  To be a groomer, you are not required to take any test. You are a product of their teacher. Only a brave groomer would allow you to watch you groom their pet from start to finish! Keep that in mind if you ask to watch. They may say , “that is against our policy”,” due to insurance reasons, you can’t be in my van or in the area when the animals are being groomed.”  Watch your pet being groomed, really watch. How is your pet really being treated while away from your sight?

Exclusively Grooming Cats

As a cat groomer I must responsibly consider all the effects my services will have on the entire cat. The cat must have a good experience.

I have the pleasure of grooming cats and helping them look and feel their best. By removing dead coat and matted fur the cat will appear more beautiful. By treating dander, oily skin, shedding  with the best shampoos advailable.  A cat will feel clean and fresh. Trimming the claws prevents injury to the cat’s paws.

More relevant than outside appearance is the impact on the cat’s psychological health. A controlled environment with minimal outside noise is ideal. The less threatened the cat feels the better it can focus its attention on the immediate interaction. Cats become overwhelmed quickly and almost always respond with aggressive displays (hissing, swatting, biting,  etc.). When I consider what the cat’s perception could be in any given circumstance I’m able to adjust my style so it compliments that particular cat’s personality. Some may want lots of affection and sweet-talk or may need to cuddle extra close while others may prefer the just-get-it-over-with-and-don’t-talk-about-it method. Whatever creates the greatest sense of understanding and respect between the cat and me will create a positive experience.

Most important is the delicate essence, or Spirit, of each unique cat. Similarities among breeds abound as do commonalities related to age and health. As with us, cats are magnificent beings who want to feel safe and be loved. That is why a kitty being groomed in its own home feels safe. No car rides or other animals to scear them.

Why do Cats Need Baths?

People think that cat groom themselves.  The reality is, cats LICK themselves.  Grooming and licking are two entirely different things.  What a cat lick itself, it’s covering itself in saliva and dander.  Nothing your cat does during the licking process relieves it from tangles, mats, fleas, dandruff, skin conditions, and unsanitary things from its hindquarters.  Not to mention if kitty is indoor outdoor what type of pollens and allergens it’s brushing up against and carrying back home.

After years of licking itself daily, a cat sleeps on the sofa or curls up on the very new pillow you lay your head on.

The Purrfect Cat Groomer uses the best products, high quality tools, and advance techniques to remove tangles, mats, degrease coats, remove excess shedding, clean up dirty hindquarters, trim nails, neaten up overgrown faces, and fix any other problems that a cat may have. In the end you will end up with a nice clean kitty.

Cats & Baths

Because cats are greasy, the bath can make or break a cats groom. Not only is the choice of shampoos an important aspect of this process, the bathing process itself plays a vital role.

Bathing a cat is an art, to be sure. Using ample amounts of shampoo and really scrubbing a cat down to the skin is necessary for achieving quality results. A groomer must pay close attention to the legs and head as well as the torso of the cat. I have seen many a completed cat groom whereby the main body of the cat looks pretty good but the legs and or head still look clumpy and separated.  So, while the cat is lying down, it looks fairly good.  But once the gets up and walks around, the clumpy legs and underbelly are seen, making the overall groom look less than stellar.  A good cat groomer will seek to achieve quality results on every inch of the feline.

When bathing cats, do not overlook these problems areas. Don’t be shy with the shampoo and use a good quality degreasing shampoo. Lather well, rinse well. Repeat if necessary.

During the drying process, if the coat continues to look “wet” or is clumpy at all, then the coat was not adequately degreased.  If the tail area looks or feels waxy, then stud tail is present.  The area must be rebathed.  If any kind of stickiness or tackiness is present during the drying process, then the cat is still greasy and must be rebathed.

The desired results should be a smooth flowing coat, free of separation and clumping. Be careful to check this after the cat is thoroughly combed out as sometimes combing will produce seemingly nice results, but then after the cat moves the coat separates and remains so.  If this is the case, the cat was not adequately degreased.

Jamaican Me Crazy ~ Dreadlock Kitty

Whether it’s litter in the paws or fecal matter and urine clinging to the rear end, anything foreign stuck to a cat’s coat makes it dirty and unsanitary. A professional cat groomer can clean up the mess and give the cat a sanitary clip and/or toe tuft trim to help prevent accumulation in the weeks that follow.  Often times a belly shave will also help keep the cat much cleaner.

Cats like to look good and smell good. But often they do not. If you’ve never had your cat professionally groomed, you will be amazed at the difference in how the cat smells, looks, and behaves afterwards! Imagine having a fresh, luxuriously soft and pleasingly fragrant cat snuggle up to your side.  Your friends will be impressed next time they drop by. After all, your pet is a reflection of you.
